Shirley Jean Manuel

November 3, 1948 — April 6, 2024

Ms. Shirley Jean Manuel passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at St. Francis Home of Saginaw. Age 75 years. She was born November 3, 1948, to Ella V. Wrenn and William Manuel.

Shirley moved to Gary, Indiana, where she began her journey and became a mother; her journey did not stop there. She moved to Saginaw, Michigan in the 70’s where she expanded her family. Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age. She received her G.E.D. from Ruben Daniels and attended Saginaw Career Complex where she studied healthcare. Shirley united with Candle Light Baptist Church and served on the Usher Board. She was a warm, loving, nurturing, honest, genuine, and authentic person; she would not sugarcoat anything. She enjoyed spending time with her family. Shirley was employed at the Montague Inn for many years and was a volunteer at Nelle Haley Elementary School. For years, Shirley took STARS public transportation, and she developed many friendships doing so. Shirley was funny and outgoing. Her door was always open if you needed a place to stay. She had a big personality and was often the life of the party. Her home was the “gathering place” for holidays and other special times. Shirley was well-known by plenty and special to many. She will be missed dearly.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory two daughters and two sons, David, Nicole, Stephen, and Ayana Manuel; grandchildren, Ronnie (Ramona) Latimore, Louis, Ashely, Iesha, and Nathan Addison, Arnae (Devant) Coleman, Dania, David, Jamarion, Ramon, Alaiah, La’Miyah, Trayevon, Brianna, and Michael Manuel, Detorrion Johnson, Gary, Ceiara, Malik, Ra’Kyiah, and Anari Manuel, Dana Harris Jr., and Aniyla Bell; twenty-six great-grandchildren; one sister, Bernice Harris; two brothers, Clifford (Letha) Calhoun and Julius (Sonia) Wrenn; one aunt, Pearl Walker; a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins; many other relatives and friends including special friends, Clair Mitchell, Leola Beal, and Cricket.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Ella V. Wrenn and William Manuel; grandparents, Earl and Maude Calhoun; she was also preceded by Joe Jackson, Darnell Calhoun, Brenda Wren, Sheilanda and Gary Manuel, and Earl Trouse.

The family would like to express special thanks to our family and friends; St. Francis Skilled Nursing Home; Pastor Willie Mills and the Candle Light Baptist Church Family; Ivan E. Phillips and the Staff of Paradise Funeral Chapel.
