Sylvia Murrell

December 23, 1950 — October 19, 2022

On Wednesday, October 19th, 2022, at 7:34AM our beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend was called, by God, from labor to reward with her children by her side. Ms. Sylvia Ann Murrell was born on December 23rd, 1950, to Vergie Mae and Edward Hooker Jr. in Sanford, NC. Sylvia was reared in a God-fearing family where she learned the importance of having faith in God at an early age while attending Tempting Congregational Church.

Sylvia attended W. B. Wicker School in Sanford, NC before relocating to Saginaw, MI where she graduated from Saginaw High School in 1970. She was employed by Wickes Corporation as an Accounts Receivable clerk prior to them closing their doors. She joined Williams Temple Church Of God In Christ on 5th Street under the tutelage of the late Bishop H. J. Williams and became a faithful member of the youth department, Inspirational Voices Choir, and the Usher Board.

Sylvia LOVED people and enjoyed being around her family and friends. She had a unique relationship with each person she came into contact with. However, her family was her heart, especially her grandchildren. She opened her home to anyone who needed love. She loved her family so much that she lived with both of her children for several years before her demise. Upon her moving to the Charlotte, NC area she joined Covenant Of Grace Institutional Church Of God In Christ. She quickly became involved as the president of the Usher board and serving on the Pastoral Aide committee.

Some of her hobbies included cooking, fishing, rummaging, interior decorating, gardening, and a good game of spades. She was ALWAYS the life of the party and full of fun.

Sylvia will be remembered for her ability to keep others inspired. One of her favorite sayings was, “Get up and get motivated!”! She was an extraordinary role model for all women and was admired for her kindness, boldness, and her unfeigned love of God. She had an uncanny ability to make others laugh and smile even in the midst of adversity which is a trait that we will cherish forever.

She was preceded in death by her father, Edward Hooker, Jr.; a son, Erin Murrell;3 grandchildren: Demond Murrell, Justin Murrell, and Danquarious Murrell; special friend Michael Simmons, nephew Kevin Richmond, and a niece Angelis Beavers.

Sylvia leaves to cherish her most delightful memories, her children Ronovan (Dawn) Hooker of Huntersville, NC; TruDonna Murrell of Saginaw, MI; her mother Vergie Hooker of Huntersville, NC; 13 grandchildren: Anthonia Watson of Saginaw, Ronovan (Jametra) Jones of Sanford, NC, Rhoneisha (Aaron) Lassiter of Concord, NC, TreYonna Watson of Saginaw, Treviant Smith of Huntersville, NC; Jatwan Blacksher of Huntersville, NC, Erin Murrell II, Ashli McBride, Erieal Murrell, Erionna Murrell, Anthony Watson Jr all of Saginaw, Wesley Hooker, Cole Hooker both of Huntersville, NC; two brothers: James Richmond of Saginaw, Shelton Richmond of Fayetteville, NC; one sister Joyce McLean of Sanford, NC; one aunt: Mary Hooker and one uncle: John Richmond both of Sanford, NC. Godchildren: Lithenie “Sue” Colley, Beverly Tatum, LaKesha Price-Johnson, Symone Brown, and Tony Sims. Special friends Phyllis Jones, Tadesha Joyner, and Diane Patton. She also leaves 24 great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, and friends along with the Greater Williams Temple and Covenant of Grace church families.
