Umrie Lee O’Steen-Johnson, age 75, passed away peacefully with family by her side on July 11, 2019. She was born May 4, 1944 in Wisner, Louisiana to Ed and Arvie O’Steen.
For many years Umrie worked as a bartender at the Sportsman and Elks Lodge, where she amassed a ton of people she called friends. She also worked for Saginaw Public Schools as an aide. She said she did it because of the love she had for the children, and some of you are sitting here today. A loving mother and homemaker, Umrie was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, especially during holidays and her birthday. She loved to love on people, play the lottery, and watch The Price is Right and Family Feud with Steve Harvey.
Umrie always said, “Do what’s right and do what’s good. Be kind and help others.” Her life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32, “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” Umrie was immensely proud of her family and left behind nothing but beautiful memories.
Umrie was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Johnson; parents, Ed and Arvie O’Steen; grandparents, Andrew Sr. and Rosie B. Williams, Robert and Missouri O’Steen; three sisters, Mary Green, Blanche B Giles, Cynthia M. Hill; four brothers, Clarence L., Jessup, Eddie and Joe O’Steen.
She is survived by her three sons, Cleveland O’Steen, Augusta, Georgia, Dexter O’Steen, Clemmons, North Carolina, Edward O’Steen, Fishers, Indiana; one daughter, Sharon O’Steen, Winston Salem, North Carolina; sixteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy O’Steen-Jackson, Royse City, Texas, Charlene Harvey, Hollywood, Florida; brothers, Samuel P. O’Steen, Mo Haven, Florida, Andrew O’Steen, Los Angels, California, John O’Steen, Alexandria, Louisiana, Alim Rahim, Denton, Texas, Garrett O’Steen, Monroe, Louisiana; many nieces, nephews and special friends (you know who you are) — all of these she loved and touched deeply.
