On the morning of February 23, 2018 at 12:46 a.m., Velma Lee Wagner passed away peacefully at her residence at the age of 77 years, and went home to be with the Lord. She was born on April 23, 1940 in Liberty, Mississippi to Daniel and Hazel May Tobias.
Velma was a faithful member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess. She was the oldest member at Mt. Vernon, and was there when the church was organized. Velma cooked breakfast at church every Sunday morning. She enjoyed cooking and going to church. Velma loved the Lord with all her heart. She was a very tidy woman; if you knew her, you knew that cleanliness was a priority. Velma worked in the school system and for Tangipahoa Parish School Board until she retired. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and dear friend. Velma will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Carl (Alice) McCaskey; six grandchildren, Shundria (Anthony) Vaughn, Lakeya Jackson, Kina McCaskey, Kelvyren McCaskey, Veronica McCaskey, Carla (Robert) Adway, all of Saginaw, Michigan; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; one sister, Helen Tobias, New Orleans, Louisiana; six brothers, Antoine, Hollis, Huey (Pearline), Calvin (Joan), Lester, Joshua (Betsy) Tobias; one dearly loved godson, Robert (Lillian) Cox; one uncle; many other relatives and friends including nieces, nephews and cousins; one special cousin and stylist, Betty Robertson; two special friends whom she dearly loved, Ruby (Selven) Cox, Georgia (Levern) Showers.
Velma was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee McCaskey; parents, Daniel and Hazel May Tobias; one sister, Ruby Tobias; four brothers, Van, Frank, Dewitt and Allsee Tobias, and first cousin, Angelina Robertson.
The family would like to express special thanks to family and friends for the calls, visits and all expressions of sympathy during our bereavement. A very special thanks to Pastor Willie Mills, First Lady Mills and the Candlelight Baptist Churuch family; Ivan E. Phillips and the Staff at Paradise Funeral Chapel.
