Mrs. Vera Vernita Hooks Houston passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at her residence in Lansing, Michigan. Age 66 years. She was born on Tuesday, July 31, 1956, in Montgomery, Alabama to Mary Reese and Morris Hooks. She was the fourth of eight children.


Vera moved to Michigan at an early age and started her life’s journey. She attended the Lansing school district and graduated from Harry Hill High School. She Later wanted to farther her education and follow in her mother’s footsteps in Cosmetology. Vera attended Craigs College of Beauty and obtained her cosmetology license. After which she joined the family business Essence Hair Care. Vera had a passion for doing hair and did so for over 30+ years throughout Lansing and the surrounding area. She was highly creative and artistic, it showed in her love for decorating. Vera had a green thumb and could grow plants with ease. Her love for greenery showed up in her home from front to back you were guaranteed to come across a plant. Vera loved to travel, fish, and spend time with her family whom she loved so dearly. She loved to hear her grandchildren call her Granny, she would greet them with a hug and smile. Vera's other passion was cooking, her favorite meal to cook was Greens, neckbones and corn bread.


She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Richard Houston Jr,; children, Reginald (Mary) Hooks, Richie (Angelita) Houston and Roslyn Ford; grandchildren, Dewayne, Deaziah, Gerald, Gabriel, Alencia and Aciah; great grandchild, Ziya Monae; siblings, Barbara (Curtis) Johnson of Delaware, Morris (Lydia) Hooks of the Philippines, Shirley (Willie) Mitchell of Tennessee, Darlene Price and Darryl (Tennille) Price of Lansing; Sister-in-laws, Affie (Joe) Parker, Paralee Balanta, Barbara Houston and Eliza Ann Houston; brother-in-laws, Jerome and Frank Houston all of Lansing; many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, including special friends, Gloria Culpepper, Earlene Austin, Gloria Lopez and Patricia Taylor.


She was preceded in death by her parents Mary Price and Morris Hooks; siblings, Dale Price and Debra Price; nieces, Lashawn Johnson and Shauntoya Coleman; parents-in-law, Richard and Eliza Houston.
