Vernita Payne (Lansing)

On Friday, August 25, 2023, Vernita Elizabeth Payne, of Lansing, Michigan, passed away suddenly at home at the age of 84 years old. She was born June 3, 1939, to John and Anna Payne of Jackson, Michigan.

Vernita accepted Christ when she was 22. She worked as a Patient Care Technician at Flint Nursing Home in Jackson before being employed at Motor Wheel Corporation in Lansing Michigan; choosing to make Lansing her home. Vernita enjoyed redecorating her home often and tending to her flower garden. She created memories by cooking, entertaining and spending time with her children and family members that span over five generations, especially during the holidays when she welcomed any and everyone, for family festivities. Her witty personality and welcoming heart was why she was known as "The Captain". She turned her house into a home for family members and friends who needed help. At one point she had 19 people living in her home, and no one ever went hungry.

Vernita leaves to cherish her memories, five daughters, Diana (Dennis) Truman-Parker of Jackson, Michigan, Cherryl Sanders of Lansing, Sharonetta Edwards of East Lansing, Leresa Edwards, Shawn Edwards of Lansing, Michigan; one son, Harvey Lee (Sonya) Edward Jr. of Lansing Michigan; two adopted great-grandsons, Tyrese and Jaquan Edwards. She was blessed with 116 grandchildren spanning 5 generations; three sisters, Margaret Payne of Lansing, Michigan, Pearl Lee of Battle Creek, Michigan, Loretta Payne of Jackson, Michigan; two Sister-in-laws, Celica Payne and Lucille Johnson of Jackson, Michigan; the love of her life, her dog Baby#4, a host of relatives and special friends.

Vernita was preceded in death by daughters, LaVerne and LaVonne Payne; brother, Raymond Payne; Grandsons JaMal Payne, Brandon Parker and Akive Edwards; and great-granddaughter, Adara Payne.
