Almighty God saw fit to call Willett K. Galloway Johnson from labor to reward on Friday, February 14, 2014. Age 94 years. She was born November 23, 1919 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to William and Mozella Galloway.
Willett was educated and graduated from high school at the age of 15 years. She was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma at an early age. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia and a Master of Arts degree from University of Michigan. Additionally, she took graduate classes at Langston University in Oklahoma and Michigan State University. After graduation from Hampton University, she married Alvin R. Johnson and moved to Saginaw, Michigan. He preceded her in death. Mrs. Johnson was a retired educator of the Saginaw Public School system and certified to teach from kindergarten through college level. She joined Zion Missionary Baptist Church shortly after moving to Saginaw, Michigan. During her many years at Zion, she served as supervisor of the youth department, supervisor of the READ program, an active participant of Sunday school, bible study class, Gospel Mission Department, the Mission Choir and past president of the Mission Department. She occasionally taught in Vacation Bible school and for many years voluntarily assisted the church secretary in the office. She was employed by the Saginaw Public School system where she taught in the public schools, the Continuation School of Saginaw for 27 years, and for 4 years at the American Baptist College.
Willett was a charter member of Eta Upsilon Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and maintained a lifetime membership with the sorority for over 52 years. She was a loyal and faithful member of Eta Upsilon Omega and maintained several offices and chairmanships. She served as a representative of the Black PanHellenic Council for many years. Additionally, she was a life member of the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan and a member of the Saginaw County Association of Retired School Personnel. She leaves to cherish her memory one niece, Sylvia D. Galloway (Bobby) Jones, nephews, Sean (Deanne) Galloway, Stephan (Yolanda) Galloway, MeShawn (James) Harrison; a host of loving friends including god-daughters, Dr. Roslyn (Adolph) McQueen, Pamela Thompson, Marilyn Adams and her sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She will surely be missed by those whose lives she touched. Willett was predeceased by her husband Alvin Johnson, brother, Ardrie Sylvester Lee Galloway Sr., nephews, Ardrie Sylvester Lee Galloway Jr. and Charles Elliott Galloway Sr., nieces, Deborah Millineice Jones and Mone'e Deann Jones, aunt, Ludie Lewis.
