Woodson C. Long "Woody" (Jackson)

Mr. Woodson Corneilius Long, "Woody" aka “Scoby” to family, passed away Friday, December 15, 2023, at Jackson County Medical Care Facility in Jackson, Michigan. Age 91 years. He was born on Wednesday, April 6, 1932, in Henderson, Tennessee. The son of William Henry Long and Norciss Trice Long.

Woodson has resided in Jackson, Michigan ever since he left Tennessee as a young man. He was a member of Second Baptist Church and later attended Lily Missionary Baptist Church. Woody worked at Crutchfield Chevrolet, Ryerson-Haynes, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, and the Aeroquip Corporation. He enjoyed fishing, spending time with family and watching sports. He loved football and basketball, but his greatest love was baseball. He really liked to watch the Detroit Tigers and he got a chance to attend a game. He had a great sense of humor and wit. Woody loved telling stories about the south and growing up there as a boy.

He leaves to cherish his memory 7 children, Woodson (Gladys) Long, Jr., Dernice (Jesse Lynn) March, Terry Long, Marsha Fay Mathis, LeeAnn Gant, Christina (Michael) Jennings, and Brian Long; 5 step children, Judith (Roosevelt) Jones, Jerome (Jerry) Atkins, Jackie, Tameka and Jamal, children of Margaret; 26 grandchildren, Hopic Shaun Long, Arius DeWayne Jones, NiKita Demetrius Long, KoKeeta Demetria Long-Lake, Antonio Brown, Eugene Brown, Quintella Brown, Jesse Lynn March, Jr., Dorothy Monetta (Robert) Jeffress, Shonta (George) Davis, Isiah Mathis, Shavada Mathis, Jonathan Mathis “Teddy”, Latesha Mathis, Trevor Anthony Buckner, Brian Long II, LaWren Long, Charlotte Jones-Smith, Douglas Randall Jones, Christopher Russell Jones, Colleen Alisa Jones, Rachelle Charise Jones, Kenyetta Atkins Maxwell, Darryn Atkins, Jerome Atkins II and Javyon; 18 great grandchildren, Zion Long, Cedarius Beard, Cyra Beard, Jordyn Monay Long, New ah Nika Long, Dream Robinson, Londyn Robinson, Lashan Jackson, Shileka Jackson, KiJuan Mathis, Aurora Mathis, Isiah Mathis, Jr., Silas Mathis, Seonajue Crenshaw, Sha’Kari Crenshaw, Sha’Miya Crenshaw, Savior Mathis, and Shaver Jenkins; sisters, Netha (Keith) Ross and Mildred (Rufus) Brown; sister-in-law, Ilene Long; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepson, Robert Earl Atkins; 5 sisters, Virgie May Long, Loryia (Albert) Smith, Lee (Wayne) Smith, Dorothy Carter, and Ora Lee Key; 4 brothers, Thomas Long, Reverend Waymond (Katie) Long, Joseph (Willie Sue) Long, and Lonnie Long.
